I'm hoping we'll hear from Ken, he's in that area. My ex's house survived - in a neighborhood that got hit really hard. My kids live there too, so I was sweating it with the rest of them. It's awful how many houses were lost.

I just talked to Ken. Every house around his burned to the ground.

His house is still standing and mostly OK, but a corner caught on fire and burnt through. So he needs to have the smoke damage cleaned up and that part repaired. He says he lucked out only because he had a guy come in and make defensible space around his house back in March.

Anyhoo, that's the update, I'm sure he'll have much more info once he gets done dealing with the immediate aftermath.

Wow, good news, although I am very sad for all those who have lost their homes. It is a mess to be sure. Among other things, the Harley dealership was destroyed too, along with other business.

A few years ago we increased our defensible space when the law changed. It's now 100 feet clear for the most part, and I'm thinking of more. It's a scary thing - I came near to evacuating a number of years ago when a trailer lost a wheel on I-80 and caught the hill on fire, one house was lost. You just never know when and where it's coming from.

good to here that your house surived without to much damage, hope things for your nieghbors go well. I came from San Diego a few years ago. After The big fire there, it took a long time before it got to some sort of normal for most people who lost their homes.

Thanks Guys....

I had no internet other than phone. AT&T came today and told me the fire in the corner burned the phone line...so they ran a temporary line until the house is fixed.

The essentials are....my neighbor Lyle (former arson investigator), sprayed his yard. The first year I was there...we did it by hand...and weed eated....to which I acknowledge that Lori did most of it. I thought the green grass and pretty flowers from the weeds were neat. LOL. The next year, she said find out who Lyle uses. So I did...and paid $350 for Sierra Pest to spray my entire 1.25 acres. The fire, literally burned around my yard in the tall grass and burned down the house you see in the photo. You can see my yard is brown...and his is black.

The firemen on Sunday night said...they stayed to defend my house...because they had a place to defend themselves. Now granted, if they weren't there...no matter how much weed killer I used...It still would have burnt down....but it certainly gave the firemen a place to stand up to it. I'm obviously very grateful....and told them about 20 times.

Ironically...they all knew Larry...and felt sorry for me, being his friend. LOL.

The final damage is roof damage, air con damage, corner house and support beam damage, phone line damage, smoke damage inside and one monitor broken during evacuation.

All in all....VERY LUCKY.

Not wanting to end up like one of Ken's neighbors, my wife ordered us one of these:

http://www.nationalfirefighter.com/prod ... ts_id=1116

It arrived yesterday. If a wildfire is headed for your house, you spray it on the house and decks with a garden hose. Check out this video, it even stands up to a blow torch:
