I see this all too often, unfortunately. Not sure what folks are thinking. We douse with water, then completely bury the fire pit.

It seems that some people just don't believe that this is a fire hazard. Maybe a lot of signs saying how they might get a bill for several hundred thousand dollars would make them sit up and take notice. I personally would like to see the Forest Service put out more info on how to safely deal with camp fires. All they want to say it seems is pour water on it. Of course many places have no water nearby. Who wants to drown their fire pit when they are getting up the next morning and will need to use the fire then? Surely there must be a safe way to contain the fire overnight and still have it usable in the morning. I have thought about bringing a few square feet of wire mesh to lay over the pit to act as a spark arrestor. I am not sure what is more likely to start a wild fire, something blowing into the pit or something blowing out into the forest. I would like to see the Forest Service put out more info on how to deal with a camp fire when pouring gallons of water on it is not possible or just not desirable.

Thanks Mike for helping everyone by putting the fire out.

Good for you in putting it out! The people who left it that way must have been complete morons. It takes LOTS of water to properly douse a campfire so I hardly ever have one when camping (and I don't like to camp in campgrounds, so you usually can't have one anyway due to fire restrictions).

If fire restrictions aren't in effect and I want to do a fire, I try to camp right next to a stream or lake so that slogging all that water is easier.

I'm going with "stupid" - though "ignorant morons" might be a good one.

BTW - Sunday morning there were 7 lightning-caused fires on the Tahoe. It was weird - I was up early and counted 7 ground strikes from here, and a couple of hours later the USFS air tac tallied them up. I ended up driving up there for the afternoon, poking around in last year's fire area. They pretty got them all controlled that afternoon despite having some real access problems. Here's a view from Deadwood Rd. towards Cavanaugh Ridge.

Glad this year is so far a quiet year for fires.
