SKID PLATES :)

SKID PLATES :)
so after having my atv for less than a year i have worn through my stock plastic skid plates (the rubicon and fordyce are really fun i also have realized that all the stock skid plates for my atv don't offer any under the foot well protection. (really dumb since that gets smashed all the time after your front tire goes over a big rock.) so i was thinking of fabricating my own skid plates. what metal would you recommend? i don't want it to rust, and i want it to be hecka strong. and i am a bit concerned about weight because its only a 450cc. any suggestions would help. thanks
p.s. i have access to an arc, mig, and tig, welder. but i don't want to build these again so yeah. durability is key!

I really like these. They bolt on with aluminum U bolts (that actually go the wrong way) but they also ride on an aluminum plug type thing. If you smash you front ones really hard, the u-bolt will fail and save your a-arm. they give you a little "crumple zone" and it save you from welding on to your a-arm. They are powder coated and have holes in them.

Wow, the guy asks about skid plates and we end up talking about colleges and spell checkers. Can you say FOCUS?

seriously come on guys help a newbye out here! actually i'm enjoying this thread so far especially ATV'er's suspension shots.
so the consensus is steel! thats what i was leaning toward my main concern was weight but i think the wimpyness (spell check that) of aluminum rules it out.

the worst thing is your mounting points that is where the fun begins.if you can make /weld tabs to frame or go through frame with bolts thats the best way if u can go .187 alum you wont have any problems and can be powder coated to hope that helps . let me know how they come out! sorry about the spelling.

I've always used http://prm-atv.com/ on all my quads and never had a problem. I looked and didn't see anything for the Kodiak on his site though.
It's worth a call. The first year the foreman came out, my buddy drove his up to Oregon and he used his quad to design the templates and my buddy got a complete set for free minus the gas to get there.
