More ATV/OHV Dis-Information

Postby Ken » Tue Jul 08, 2008 12:05 pm

A new Ad by the Ad Council just completely baseless. There has been no document fire started by an OHV with a FEDERALLY Mandated Spark Arrestor.

As a kid, I thought the Ad Council was some sort of public service. Later I discovered it's actually just another biased media source...

This is the response from the head of Utah's OHV Division of the State Parks and Recreation.
My reply to the Ad Council, Forest Service (including copies to local and regional folks) and the National Association of State Foresters (including a copy to Utah's State Forester). Thanks to the rest for your wording which I shamelessly stole!

Fred

To Whom it may concern:

I recently viewed the new Smokey Bear public service announcements found on www.stateforesters.org and sponsored jointly by the Ad Council, the USDA Forest Service, and the National Association of State Foresters. While the PSAs were clever and well produced, I found the segment dealing with all-terrain vehicles and fire prevention to be offensive and lacking a factual basis.

The PSA implies that the act of starting any ATV will produce sparks sufficient to start a wildfire. That is simply untrue. A properly maintained ATV, with the required spark arrestor in place, does not present the fire hazard discussed in the PSA. To the best of my knowledge, there is no documented instance of an ATV, with the proper equipment (spark arrestor) installed, having started a wildfire by simply being started on public lands. Implying otherwise is irresponsible and dishonest, and is a misrepresentation of the facts.

In the absence of documented evidence that starting an ATV on a cleared, unvegetated parking area (as depicted in the ad) will start a wildfire, I would request that the ad be immediately pulled from circulation. In its present configuration, this ad is most certainly not a "Public Service Announcement" but is a blatant, malicious attack on motorized recreation and the millions of responsible American families who safely and responsibly ride ATVs, and appears to be more directed at advancing an "anti-motorized" political agenda than at educating the public. The Ad Council, the USDA Forest Service, and the National Association of State Foresters should be embarrassed by this ad.

Fred
It is time we all stood up and spoke up to protect our love of ATVs and the outdoors.

PLEASE write to the email addresses listed and anyone and everyone you know to spread the word that his Public Service announcement is a False and misleading and needs to be pulled from circulation immediately.

I recommend everyone also write to each and every ATV manufacturer and let them know they are being made to look as if they are building flame throwers not sophisticated machines with built in Federally mandated fire prevention and safety equipment.

According to the National Association of State Foresters website
The Ad Council is distributing the new PSAs to media outlets nationwide this week. Per the Ad Council's model, the PSAs are airing and running in advertising time that is donated by the media. Since 1980, the Wildfire Prevention campaign has received more than $1 billion in donated advertising time and space. The campaign is the longest-running PSA campaign in U.S. history.
I therefore suggest everyone also bombard their local media with phone calls and emails to request they NOT run this PSA. As stated above
"In its present configuration, this ad is most certainly not a "Public Service Announcement" but is a blatant, malicious attack on motorized recreation and the millions of responsible American families who safely and responsibly ride ATVs, and appears to be more directed at advancing an "anti-motorized" political agenda than at educating the public. "
PLEASE take a minute and write a letter or email to complain about this false advertising.

Here's what I sent yesterday....

The new ATV causing fires campaign with Smokey The Bear is uninformed propaganda. The ad's focus is the guys shouldn't start their ATV because it will cause a fire. The ad is inaccurate and does not truly represent any fire danger from starting an ATV.

As you SHOULD BE AWARE, all ATV's are required to have a Federally Mandated Spark Arrestor. I have been unable to find one case where a fire was started by an ATV with a Federally mandated Spark Arrestor.

We encourage responsible OHV recreation. However, this ad should be pulled due to it's inaccuracy and lack of any real facts. A fire in the forest is much more likely to be started by a backpacker with an illegal campfire (South Lake Tahoe - 2007), than by a spark coming out of an ATV.

It would have been more intelligent and helpful to have an ad that encouraged ATV users to NOT remove their Spark Arrestor, or to point out the dangers of riding through dry brush and to encourage riders to stay on established trails.

This ad is painfully obviously that it was created by someone who has no knowledge of ATV's. Go read the comments on YouTube...They know. The only people who probably think the ad is great, are people who don't ride ATV's and I would bet that's not your target audience.

People are idiots.

The other one you see ALL THE TIME...is women, getting back into the car while they pump gas...potentially building up static electricity which will discharge when they touch the pump.

From their FAQ:

"How does the Ad Council define public service advertising?

Public service advertising is commonly defined as "advertising that serves the public interest." The objective of these ads is education and awareness of significant social issues in an effort to change the public's attitudes and behaviors and stimulate positive social change. For more information about PSAs and the Ad Council's criteria, please visit the Non-Profit Resources section of the website."

--> .Woopsie, they blew it. This advertising doesn't "serve the public interest", nor is it educational, since it is basically false.

"How is the Ad Council funded?

General operating contributions from more than 375 individuals, corporations, foundations, and constituent organizations are the Ad Council's principal source of funding. Each year, we host the Ad Council's Public Service Award Dinner, our largest fund-raising event at which we honor a business leader for his or her commitment to public service. If you would like to contribute to the Ad Council, please visit the Donate section of our website."

Me thinks we need to find out who those 375 individuals, corporations, foundations and constituent organizations are... then tell them (nicely) that we are going to boycott them if they don't pressure the Ad Council to pull this misconceived ad.

On Edit - Changed red to blue to protect D2's retinas.

OK, I changed to blue to prevent retinal burnoutitosisis. Burnoutittosis is a highly technical term that you may not be familiar with. Probably because I just made it up. :)
