Ford F550 ?????

Postby DAVE » Mon Mar 24, 2008 7:35 pm

Looking for a little help I found a 2000 f550 4x4 with 68k miles xlt 6speed with a splitter w/7.3 powerstroke. they want $21,500 looks to be in pretty good shape. just wondering if you guys had any insight on the 550's. it's got 4.88 gears. I have been on kelly blue book and edmonds and it seems that they stop at the f350 for pricing.

why do I want such a truck......I would like to get a 40ft fifth wheel toybox and the loaded max wt of the trailer is 18000 lbs....Blam

I've heard the fuel economy on that set up is pretty poor, less than 10mpg. Add a trailer and you're looking at 5-6 mpg.............

and we ain't your wife, we know and understand why you need/want/desire such a truck....Blam

Hey Dave I work for a large dealership and we mainly sell diesel pick ups, I might be able to give/get you info to help out, if you dont mind me asking why are you going with a f550 and not a f350?

I had a 07 37' Weekend Warrior (Biggest POS toyhauler made)
Loaded It was about 18k lbs, truck and trailer grossed 27,000lbs. I towed it with 3 trucks.
A 03 F350 With $10k in mods done to engine. Over the sierras on I-80 It would hold 70-75 mph pretty easy and about 6-7mpg
The 06 F350 stock would do 30 -35mph over I-80 with a custom tuned program, exhaust and intake, would do about 40mph floored. And get about 5mpg.
And last is a 07 dodge 3500, bone stock. 40-45mph over I-80, and 6mpg.

All three trucks were 4wd automatics 4 doors.

If all you will use the truck for a 550 will be ok, but I would look for a F350 dually, insurance and DMV fees will be alot cheaper. Also Most F550s are stripped down trucks, in a 350 you can get alot nicer options.
But you will be over the legall rating of the 350. I think a 450 would be ok for the weight legally.

Dave is secretly planning the take over of the dog washing business in all of NorCal. He will be pulling the ultimate bathing center for pooches on the west coast.

I can see the tag line on the trailer now..

I would go with either a 6spd dodge 3500 dually or 6 speed f350 dually, 2wd would be alot better, but you may perfer 4x4.
I think with the dodge in a 6spd you would be just fine with what you want to pull.

I can't justfy buying a truck that will do nothing else but haul a trailer, it will be my daily driver. It seems that the one tons come up a bit short when you are talking anout a 18,000 lb trailer. I know we can make the power in a 1 ton to pull but don't think it will be legal. The other thing that is of importance is STOPING. The f550 that I found is in good shape with low miles for the year 68k and the price seems close to what it should be $21,500 maybe a bit high. the truck has all the options that my 2002 f250 has so that would be a side ways move. I bet the f550's ride like crap.

I don't think the max pulling weight for a 2500/3500 is all that much different than the Ford/Dodge for the same class.

The difference is....5 years from now...the Allison will be going strong...and the Ford/Dodge will be heading for a rebuild. :)

The Chevy out pulls the Dodge/Ford in every test.

As for the 3/4 Ton/1 Ton....The ONLY difference between a 3/4 Ton Chevy and a 1 Ton Chevy...is the Leaf springs. That's it. Tranny is the same, rear end is identical. Add bags to your 3/4 ton and you have more than a 1 ton.

The weak point of ANY tow pick up is the TIRES! If you're looking to tow a hauler, and don't have dually's, then your max Hitch weight is about 2500. Anything more than that...and you're playing with fire. Rated E tires around 3000lbs max each. So that's 6K. If you're towing 3,000 hitch...you've just taken out 1/2 your weight on those tires just with the trailer (assuming no STUFF makes it heavier). Add the truck weight...and you're on the edge.

Kendo and I have been looking at them....doing the math....These monster haulers....38Ft/39/40...all exceed at dry weight and hitch weight, any 3/4 or 1 ton. You have to have dedicated haul truck to lug them around safely. RV Villlage in Roseville...has a Ford 450 that they will only sell with their Inferno 40footer...since it's around 18,000 lbs.

WOW a 650.......I think I will pass, I am going to keep running my 250 powerstroke for a bit longer 123k with no issues.

Thanks Dave

Dave a friend just picked up a used Freightliner, 370 Cummins, 9 speed, A/C, and cruise that's rated at 35k GVW. He's got a big ass Weekend Warrior that's probably close to 18k loaded (probably more if his wife loaded it  ), looks like a reasonable option if you're towing heavy, and I think the price was right. PM camorhino for details
